The security lighting system lamps can be divided into two categories. High intensity discharge lamps are the ones that are gas filled lamps and operate on magnetic or electronic ballasts. The ballast converts the voltage that the lamp gets into a very high operating voltage that can ignite the gas and thus light the lamp. Such outdoor lightings generally use mercury or sodium. These are generally installed at a height for ensuring that they operate most effectively. The other types of lamps are the halogen or the incandescent lamps. These are the ones that are most commonly used in offices and houses. These lamps are the ones that contain a carbon filament that glows when a current is passed through them. These are referred to as flood lights.
There are several features of outdoor security lighting that need to be taken into consideration. One of the most common features is the brightness of the light and the area that it can illuminate with that brightness. For most purposes the brightness of the lights should be such that it does not obstruct the vision and it must cover sufficient area. Another feature is that whether the lights are photo sensitive or motion sensitive. The photo sensitive lights are the ones that turn off in the mornings and turn on at nights. The motion sensitive lights are the ones that turn on when a motion is sensed. Another feature to be considered is the cost and quality of lights. It must be ensured that the quality is not compromised for a cheap price of the lights.
It is best to go in for economical lights. These lights are the ones that are not very expensive and do not draw much power. These economical lights do their job effectively.
